No risk, No Reward

The Risky Business team with angler Danny Coll of Big Pine Key, Fl and Captain Jose Saavedra also of Big Pine Key released a Blue Marlin and a White Marlin on Day 3 of the Key West Marlin Tournament to secure a come-from-behind win.  The 800 points for the two marlin releases along with 50 points for a sailfish release on Day 2 and 15.6 points for a dolphin weighed-in on Day 3 gave the team a total of 865.6 points. 

The Cajun Queen with Captain Greg Eklund of Islamorada and anglers Bob & Brad Whitlock of Ft. Myers, FL was at the top of the leader board starting on Day 1 of the tournament with a Blue Marlin release then kept the lead on Day 2 by weighing in a 33.65 lb. dolphin.  They weighed another dolphin for an additional 25.05 points on Day 3 to take second place with 458.7 points. 

Third place went to the B.F.B team with Captain/Angler Paul Barret of Gulfport, FL.  The B.F.B team began Day 3 of the tournament scoreless yet managed to release a Blue Marlin and a 17.5 lb. dolphin for a total of 417.5 points to beat out six other teams who finished with 400 points. 

Fun Fish Division awards went to Reel Conch with a 42.2 lb. dolphin,  Kingbird with a 41.8 lb. Dolphin, Cajun Queen with a 33.65 lb Dolphin, Last Dance with a 20.45 lb. Tuna, Outer Limits with a 73.3 lb. Wahoo, Koko with a 67.55 lb. Wahoo and On Course with a 20.15 lb. Wahoo.

A Day of Missed Opportunities

Day two of the Key West Marlin Tournament ended with only one Blue Marlin Release by the Risky Business Team from Key West.  Three boats lost Blue Marlin that were hooked up including Gettin-Tail, Time Out and On Course.  The Cajun Queen from Ft. Meyers caught a 33.65 lb dolphin to add to their Blue Marlin release from day one and take the overall lead of the tournament with 433.65 points.  Six other teams trail close behind with one Blue Marlin release and 400 points.  Cajun Queen's dolphin also puts them in second place in the Dolphin category of the Fun Fish Division.  The Outer Limits team landed a monster Wahoo that weighed in 73.3lbs to take a comanding lead in the Wahoo category of the Fun Fish Division.  Stay tuned for tomorrows final results to see which team comes out on top and takes home the First Place trophy.

Big Day for the Blues

The first day of fishing in the 2008 Key West Marlin Tournament got off to an exciting start with Blue Marlin being the most caught fish of the day.  Six different teams including Cajun Queen, Business Calls, Tight Lines II, High Stakes, Double Diamond, and Peggy Sue II released Blue Marlin to score 400 points while many others had hook-ups that were lost.  Compass Rose & Outer Limits both released Sailfish for 50 points each while five other teams scored Fun Fish points with Dolphin weighed in.  The Kingbird team from Key West weighed in the heaviest dolphin of the day at 41.8 lbs.

The 26th annual 2008 Key West Marlin Tournament kicked off on Wednesday with 50 boats and over 300 participants registering for the event.  The 50 teams will be competing for $50,000 in guaranteed cash prizes as well as an additional $200,000 in available bonus prizes.  This year's event is again being held at the Conch Republic Seafood Company in the Historic Seaport of Key West.  The headquarters includes a large tent with vendor and sponsor displays.  Weigh-ins are held on Thursday and Friday from 4pm-6:30pm and on Saturday from 3pm-5pm.  Paricipants will have 3 nightly dinners to enjoy.  Thursday night is an Island Pig Roast hosted by tournament sponsor Grand Key Resort complete with a steel drum band.  A Dockside Fish Fry will be held on Friday at the new Key West Harbour Yacht Club.  This event will include a live band as well as a live auction to benefit Mote Marine Labratories.  The tournament concludes with an Awards Banquet Dinner and silent auction at the Beachside Resort & Conference Center on Saturday night.  Call 305-292-2710 for any additional information.
